HOKIES SWEEP BY GREEN WAVE

Junior pitcher Brad Clontz was the beneficiary of a 20-hit, four-home run Virginia Tech attack as the Hokies rolled to an 18-10 Metro Conference baseball victory over Tulane in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Tech (19-2-1 overall, 2-0 Metro) completed the sweep and extended its winning streak to seven games with an 11-8 victory in the second game, which was shortened to seven innings.

Clontz (7-0) started and pitched eight innings, striking out eight and walking two despite while giving up 12 hits and all 10 Tulane runs.

Backing him up, however, were freshman Denny Hedspeth and junior Josh Haggas, who hit two-run homers, and J.R. Hawkins and Will Hamilton, each of whom hit a three-run homer in a six-run seventh inning.

Tom Morton led Tulane (18-12, 3-5) with eight RBI on two homers and a fielder's choice grounder.

The Hokies tagged Tulane ace Ivan Zweig (4-4) for eight runs in five innings in the nightcap. Robby Douglas (6-0) gained the victory, with relief help from Jonathan Frohm, who struck out six in 2 1/3 innings to earn his third save.

The teams finish the three-game series today at noon. - Staff report
