NORTHWEST HARDWARE TO EXPAND

Northwest True Value Hardware, a 45-year-old institution in Western Virginia, said Monday it is expanding with the purchase of McCarty's Hardware east of Vinton.

The business, to be known as Northwest Hardware in Vinton, will expand to occupy all of a 15,000-square-foot building on Virginia 24, said Floyd W. Overstreet, chairman of the family-owned operation. McCarty's Hardware has used one-third of the building.

The Overstreets bought the company from Charles McCarty, who moved there about six years ago from a downtown Vinton location, where his father for many years operated McCarty's Supply. Charles McCarty runs a household equipment and party goods rental business.

Jack Minter, a veteran of 42 years with Northwest, will manage the new store. He will start with six or eight employees.

Overstreet said his family bought the land, fixtures and inventory but declined to disclose the sales price. He said the store will be remodeled and interior walls removed.

This will be the fourth location for Northwest True Value Hardware, a company started in 1947 on 11th Street Northwest in Roanoke.

From its headquarters on Williamson Road, the company operates two branch stores, in the Fort Lewis section west of Salem and at Clifton Forge. Adding a fourth store will increase the company's employment to about 60 people.

Two Overstreet sons are officers and part-owners of the business. Charles Overstreet is in charge of expansion and Lee Overstreet is president.

The company, recognized for carrying a wide assortment of hardware items, has been described as among the three largest retailers in its field in the state.
