SUPERVISORS AGREE TO COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL

A middle school in Floyd County is a step closer to reality.

In a joint meeting with the School Board Friday night, the county Board of Supervisors agreed in principle to the concept of a middle school.

The two boards will meet again Thursday night at 7 at the courthouse to discuss possible designs for a middle school.

No timetable has been set for moving toward a middle school set up. However, the County Council of PTAs had suggested purchasing the former Sarah Lee Knitting plant in Floyd for use as a middle school.

Also, the need to separate eighth graders from older high school students was given as a reason to support the proposed auxiliary gym at the high school.

The gym has been placed on the back burner by both boards. The Virginia Public School Authority bonds will be used instead for site improvements and design work, possibly including work on a middle school.

In other business, the supervisors authorized County Administrator Randy Arno to negotiate a contract with Warren G. Lineberry to serve as the county's part-time attorney.

Lineberry served as the commonwealth's attorney for the county from 1988 until the end of last year. He did not seek re-election last year. He would replace Marc Small, who announced his resignation effective Wednesday at the board's March meeting.

The Board of Supervisors also agreed to meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. to review budget procedure.
