At Shawsville, Scott Phillips struck out 13 as as the Shawnees whipped Floyd County 8-3 in a non-district game. Phillips (2-0) also had two hits and two RBI for Floyd (2-3).
At Bedford, Scott Martin pitched a five-hitter and Stu Young belted a solo homer as Liberty downed Amherst County 5-2 in a Seminole District game called after five innings because of darkness. Liberty is 3-1; Amherst County 2-2.
\ SOFTBALL: At New Castle, Floyd County rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth and final inning and defeated Craig County 15-13 in the teams' season-opener.
The game was shortened because of darkness.
Robbin Gallimore went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored for the Buffaloes.
