GLENVAR WINS WITH NO-HITTER

Junior Bobbie Jo Wright pitched her third career no-hitter Monday as Glenvar defeated visiting Parry McCluer 7-0 in a Pioneer District softball game.

Wright (1-0) struck out 14 as Glenvar opened defense of its league title.

Stacy Shelor led Glenvar (1-1 overall, 1-0 district), going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Parry McCluer is 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the district.

\ SOFTBALL: At New Castle, Floyd County rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth and final inning and defeated Craig County 15-13 in the teams' season-opener.

The game was shortened because of darkness.

Robbin Gallimore went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored for the Buffaloes.

Betsy Boardwine went 2-for-4 and scored three runs for the Rockets.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Vinton, Michael Holm and Hunter Durham each scored three goals as William Byrd walloped Alleghany 11-0 in a Blue Ridge District game. The Terriers (1-1, 1-0) outshot the Mountaineers 66-1. Alleghany is 0-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the district.

At North Cross, Mark Roberts' two goals led the Raiders to a 6-3 win over Roanoke Catholic in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

At Northside, Griffin Cross scored the game-winning goal with 10:03 left to play as Salem nipped Northside 2-1 in a Blue Ridge District contest.

Owen Woodward had the other goal for Salem (2-0, 1-0). Aaron Curfuss scored for the Vikings, who were playing their season opener.

At Glenvar, the Highlanders got goals from Corey Moses, Braden VanRavestein and Knute Grongstad in defeating Bassett 3-2 in a non-district game.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Martinsville, Patrick Henry shut out Martinsville 2-0 in a non-district game.

Freshman Ayisha Whitenack scored the first goal and sophomore Amanda Bounds scored the second on an assist from Meredith Bowden.

Goalies Casey Kesler and Shannon Groves had the shut out for the Patriots (3-0).
