MANAGER REPORTS BUCS PLAYING WELL IN FLORIDA

The Salem Buccaneers have been chalking up the victories during the past week of spring-training games, and manager John Wockenfuss says he has seen some good play from his team.

"Pitching on a whole has been very good," Wockenfuss said Monday during a telephone call from the Class A Carolina League team's spring-training camp.

The Buccaneers are part of the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system.

Wockenfuss said Rich Bullard has performed well in long relief and Dave Jones and Rich Robertson have pitched well.

On offense, some veteran Bucs have shown power. Rick Aude hit a long home run against the Carolina League's Frederick Keys, and Sil Campusano hit a long home against Kenosha of the Midwest League.

The Bucs beat Augusta, the other Class A team in the Pirates' farm system, 3-1 on Monday.

In its previous five games, Salem beat Frederick 6-2; beat Kenosha 3-0; beat Sarasota of the Florida State League 3-0; beat Frederick 8-5; and beat Kenosha 1-0. - Staff report
