CHURCH BREAKS GROUND FOR ADDITION

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church has broken ground for an expansion, predicted to cost some $407,000, to provide new Sunday school rooms and other space.

The ground-breaking ceremony on Main Street followed the church's Sunday service. Contractor Sam Lionberger said he hoped the work would be complete by Thanksgiving.

A feasibility study in 1989 was followed by a fund-raising effort last spring which resulted in pledges of $217,000 over three years.

The congregation approved the expansion plans March 22 and authorized the church trustees to secure the necessary financing to complete the project.

The Rev. Alfred Shumate, 90, who had been the church's pastor at its last expansion in the 1940s, joined the Rev. Roger Kluttz, its current pastor, and others in turning over a shovel of dirt to launch this expansion.
