RECREATION CONSOLIDATION IDEA UNPOPULAR

The chairman of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors has suggested exploring ways of consolidating a county recreation program with one already established in the town of Wytheville.

"I realize this is going to be a real sticky political situation," Andy Kegley said at last weekend's joint town and county Recreation Commissions meeting.

He was right.

"Such a consolidation would never fly, because the county remains too divided to come together under one recreation authority," responded county Recreation Commission member Joe DeBord.

Members of the Wythe County/Rural Retreat Lake Authority, which operates a recreational lake and surrounding facilities at Rural Retreat, was also opposed to Supervisor Jack Crosswell's suggestion that the county's recreation board might be combined with the lake authority board.

John Phillips, a former Rural Retreat High School football coach, was named by the county to represent the West Wytheville District on the county Recreation Commission. He replaces Jack Lee, who resigned.
