ARTISTS SPEAK THROUGH THEIR ART

THERE ARE many things I approve of in our newspaper now, notably the attempt to cover both sides of a question.

I do question the value of your new Art Essay feature. It has been pointed out to me that if artists could speak in a voice that could be heard, or create a vision in words, it would not be necessary to draw, paint or sculpt. In other words, they are visually oriented and need to use that medium.

Visual art, whether personally appreciated or not, sanitized or not, critically perfect or not, is very much a part of life - not to mention free speech. It should be encouraged and brought to the attention of as many people as possible.

I hope Bill Rutherford continues to fill the breach. Art is not extraneous. KATHRYN M. FLANNAGAN ROANOKE
