PANTHERS LOSE OPENER IN BASEBALL

Ferrum and star pitcher Billy Wagner got off to a rocky start in the college baseball season, losing 11-3 to St. Bonaventure at Jacksonville, Fla., on Sunday.

Wagner, a junior left-hander, allowed one hit, walked 12, threw two wild pitches and gave up four earned runs in 2 innings. Jerold Smith, Jason St. Clair and Chad Maddox each drove in a run for the Panthers.

St. Bonaventure's Mike Culley pitched all seven innings for the win, allowing three hits and one earned run.

The teams meet again today. Ferrum concludes its four-game stand in Jacksonville by playing Tusculum on Tuesday and Concordia on Wednesday before returning home to play Maryville on Saturday.

Virginia, under new coach Dom Starsia, opened its men's lacrosse season with a 21-6 non-conference victory over Villanova (0-1). UVa broke a 3-3 tie in the second period with seven consecutive goals. Kevin Pehlke had four goals and three assists; he is second on UVa's all-time goal scoring list with 108, eight behind Chase Monroe. Greg Travnor had three goals for the Cavaliers. UVa outshot the Wildcats 65-28. UVa goalie James Ireland had seven saves and allowed five goals and Tom Keratzes had three saves and allowed one goal.

Tennessee-Chattanooga guard Tim Brooks was mentioned on every ballot and was the top vote-getter for the Southern Conference Sports Media Association 1992-93 all-conference team.

VMI center Lewis Preston, who averaged 17.2 points and 7.5 rebounds, was voted to the second team with 85 points.

Brooks averaged 15.9 points and 6.3 assists in 27 games for the league-champion Moccasins. The 6-foot senior was mentioned on all 66 ballots and was selected first-team on 63 for 192 points.

Also on the first team are Appalachian State forward Billy Ross (189 points), Marshall forward Tyrone Phillips (176), Georgia Southern guard Charlton Young (126) and Furman forward Derek Waugh (101).

Also on the second team are UTC guard Gary Robb (92), Western Carolina forward Robert Gaines (78), and East Tennessee State forwards Jerry Pelphrey (77) and Trazel Silvers (55).

The teams were determined by a vote of 66 Southern Conference Sports Media Association members before Saturday's league games. Players received three points for a first-team vote and one point for a second-team vote.

The league player, freshman and coach of the year will be announced today.
