BOARD PLANS BUILDING CONTRACT APPROVAL

Approval of a construction contract for a new Blacksburg elementary school is on tonight's agenda for the Montgomery County School Board.

The board meeting will be held in the Blacksburg High School auditorium, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Kenbridge Construction Co. of Kenbridge, Va., submitted a total low bid of $4.61 million for construction of the school.

The company bid $4.57 million for construction of the school and an additional $38,000 for an optional remote temperature sensors control system.

Motley and Associates and Larry Schoff, the county's director of facilities, maintenance and transportation, have reviewed the bid and will recommend to the board that it be accepted.

In all, four of seven bids received for the school came in under the architect's estimate of what it would cost to build the school.

The school will have an expanded gym and dressing room facilities, which will be used by Blacksburg for its recreational programs. The additional cost will be paid by the town.

Also on the board's agenda tonight are:

Discussion of a proposed new policy governing school clubs and extra-curricular activities within the school system.

A presentation by the county's 2006 strategic planning commission, which is in the midst of developing suggestions about how the school system should be structured to fulfill the county's educational needs in the next century.
