ROANOKE VALLEY HAS HIRING PLANS
Manpower Inc., breaking the recent pattern of layoff announcements in the Roanoke Valley, said Monday that 27 percent of the employers it surveyed have plans to hire over the next three months. The permanent jobs most likely to be filled in the April-through-June quarter are in construction; manufacturing of smaller, replacable goods; wholesale and retail trade; finance; insurance and real estate, according to the quarterly job outlook by Manpower, a temporary help company.
Reductions are expected in education jobs.
About 70 percent of the companies surveyed said they plan no changes in employment and only 3 percent said they intend to reduce their work forces. Spring usually brings rejuvenation in hiring, said Ann Ward of Manpower.
The new surveys shows Roanoke-area hiring plans are slightly better than in last year's second quarter, when 20 percent of the companies expected to add employees, none planned to lay off and 80 percent saw no change.
The Milwaukee, Wis., company said 26 percent of employers responding to a similar national survey plan to hire - the most optimistic report in almost four years. Another 7 percent, the smallest portion since 1989, expect to reduce their work forces and 65 percent expect no change.
In the South, the company said, construction companies anticipate the most favorable hiring conditions for any second quarter in five years. And services firms are projected to return to the employment patterns of before the recession.
