MEDIA PORTRAYAL OF BLACKS IS TOPIC OF TECH LECTURE
Editor and professor Salim Muwakkil will speak on "Distorted Images: African Americans and the Mass Media" Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Radford University's Heth Ballroom.Muwakkil is senior editor of the national bi-weekly news magazine "In These Times," a teacher of urban studies and an instructor of classes on black culture and media at the Associated Colleges in Chicago. He also serves on the editorial board of the Chicago Reporter and the Chicago-based Community Media Workshop.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Muwakkil has published a wide variety of essays on black culture and politics. He also hosts a talk show on Chicago radio and is a frequent guest on "Chicago Tonight" and "Our Voices."
The lecture is sponsored by the department of Communication and the Center for Academic Enrichment. Admission is free.
