ATLANTA OKS STADIUM
The Atlanta City Council agreed Monday to proceed with construction of the $207 million Olympic Stadium after the Atlanta Braves sweetened the deal by nearly $4 million."What we get is a new $207 million stadium free," Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson told the council. "I did not say maintenance would be free, but if we do not build now, with an Olympics rationale, the Braves will probably stay until 1997 and then ask us to build a stadium. This is not a perfect deal, but the positives far outweigh the negatives."
With two members abstaining, the council voted 10-5 to approve a lease agreement that had appeared in doubt two weeks ago.
