COAL STRIKE EXPANDS TO 6 MAJOR PRODUCERS
About 1,700 miners at five companies in three states joined the picket lines Monday as the United Mine Workers expanded a month-old selective strike by 7,500 other miners at Peabody Holding Co. operations. The strike now includes selected mines of six of the nation's largest operators, including Peabody Holding of St. Louis, the nation's largest coal producer. Peabody workers walked off the job Feb. 2, when the UMW's contract expired with the Bituminous Coal Operations Association.
UMW President Richard Trumka said the strike was expanded at 12:01 a.m. Monday because coal operators refuse to provide information about corporate structure, coal land ownership and other issues needed to ensure job security for union miners.
The UMW wants to halt the practice it calls "double breasting," in which unionized coal operators set up non-union subsidiaries and transfer coal reserves and sales contracts to those subsidiaries.
