PUCH, BEEDIE MAKE FIRST-TEAM ODAC
Roanoke's Debbie Puch made the all-ODAC women's basketball first team Tuesday, and her coach, Susan Dunagan, was voted co-coach of the year with Bridgewater's Laura Mapp.Puch, a senior forward from Salem, averaged 12 points per game in leading the Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions to their fourth straight Division III playoff berth.
Dunagan's teams have won three ODAC titles in a row and eight in the past 12 years. The Maroons lost five seniors off last year's team but still have a 21-5 record.
Serena Beedie of Hollins also made the first team. The senior guard led her team to a school-record 12 wins and was second in the league with 16 points per game and tied for fourth in the league in assists with a 3.9 average.
Guilford junior center Brenda Davis was voted player of the year. She averaged 23.2 points and 13.3 rebounds, both leading the league. Bridgewater's Trisha Weatherholtz and Virginia Wesleyan's Martha Sainz, both senior guards, rounded out the first team.
Bridgewater coach Mapp led her team to the final of the ODAC tournament, and the Eagles finished 15-12.
The second team was made up of Roanoke senior guard Amy Saunders, senior forward Heather Conley of Emory & Henry, sophomore guard Becca Nissley of Eastern Mennonite, and freshman forward Katy Parrish and freshman guard Jenn Kohler of Randolph-Macon. Kohler was voted freshman of the year.
