COVINGTON ON A ROLL
Covington won 13 games in a row late last year and made the Group A state boys' basketball tournament.This season, the Cougars have won eight in a row after beating Bath County 72-63 Monday night at Lord Botetourt High School to take the Pioneer District Tournament championship.
Keeno Jones had 18 points and Van Wallace added 16 in the victory that puts Covington (15-8) in the Region C Tournament along with Glenvar, the league's regular-season champion.
Wallace, one of Timesland's leading scorers, is just getting back into shape after recovering from a sprained ankle.
"Every day he gets better," said Covington coach Brad Morton, whose team meets Grayson County in the Region C opener tonight in Christiansburg.
The Cougars led by six points at halftime and by 12 at the end of three quarters. Covington built its lead to 72-55 with 1:12 left before Bath County closed with a flurry. Corey Hunter added 10 points for Covington.
The Chargers (12-12) got 16 points from Michael Edwards and 13 from Tyler McCune.
Covington shot 54 percent (27-for-50) and led the rebounding 32-22. \
