TIKI BARBER SETS RECORD IN LONG JUMP

Cave Spring's Tiki Barber broke an 8-year-old record Monday when he made a long jump of 24 feet, 6 1/4 inches in the Group AAA Northwestern Region track meet at VMI in Lexington.

William Fleming's Robert Majors, one of the best athletes in Timesland history, had a jump of 23-8 that had stood since 1985.

Barber's jump is the second-best nationally this indoor season behind Marvin Forde of Uniondale, N.Y., at 24-8 1/4. It surpassed a 24-6 by Tom Thompson of St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip, N.Y.

"He just nailed it," Cave Spring coach Jim Huffman said. "He said he wanted to get two good jumps. His first jump was 22-4, and his next one was 23-6 where he seemed to take off a little behind the board. I didn't do anything. I just let him do what he wanted to do."

Cave Spring scored 52 points to finish second behind Gar-Field in the team standings.

The Barbers - Tiki and twin brother Ronde - dominated the meet individually. Tiki also won the 55-meter dash, and Ronde took the 55-meter hurdles. The pair teamed with Travis Manning and Chris Vaughan on the winning 800-meter relay team.

In the girls' meet, Gar-Field also ran away with the title with 107 points, more than double the totals of the nearest rivals. North Stafford beat Patrick Henry 53-52 for second place. PH was led by Arminta Crosby, who finished first in the 55-meter dash and long jump.

Next for the top six finishers in the regional meet is the Group AAA state track meet starting Friday in Fairfax.
