KICKOFF CLASSIC TO STAY AT GIANTS STADIUM THROUGH 2000
The Kickoff Classic is going to stay at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., through the year 2000. The new seven-year agreement between the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics ended months of speculation that the game was going to be moved after this year's contest.Under the new agreement, the minimum guaranteed payout to the teams in each game will be $650,000, and it will increase to $700,000 for the last two years of the deal.
There will be several significant changes regarding the eligibility of teams that play in what has become the college season opener. The NCAA has approved changes that will allow schools to play in the game every four years instead of five and will allow rematches of postseason bowl games.
ABC-TV has agreed to pay $800,000 annually for the rights to televise the game for the next four years, sports authority CEO Robert E. Mulcahy said.
