CLASSMATE: TYSON'S ACCUSER FALSELY ACCUSED HIM OF RAPE EARLIER

A high school classmate of the woman who charged Mike Tyson with rape said she falsely accused him of rape more than two years before the former heavyweight boxing champion was sent to prison.

Tyson's lawyer, Alan Dershowitz, said this latest disclosure should be considered new evidence, bolstering his contention that his client deserves a new trial. In February 1992, Tyson was sentenced to six years in the Indiana Youth Center for a rape conviction.

Wayne Walker, 21, said Desiree Washington willingly had sex with him once in October 1989 while both attended Coventry High School. She then accused him of rape.

At Newport, R.I., Angela Mortimer, a 1961 Wimbledon champion from Great Britain, and Lamar Hunt, a Texas businessman who helped found World Championship Tennis, will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame this year.

New penalties for slow play, including disqualification, will go into effect on the PGA Tour this week at the Doral Open. The penalties were ratified by the Tour's Policy Board, commissioner Deane Beman said. If a player takes too much time twice during a round, he will be fined $1,000 and lose a stroke. A third too-much-time penalty calls for another $1,000 fine and stroke loss. A fourth penalty in the same round will result in disqualification.

Thomas B. Hunnicutt, associate commissioner of the Southern Conference, has been hired as the new athletic director at North Carolina-Asheville. Hunnicutt succeeds Tim Dillon, who resigned in December to accept a similar position with Alaska-Anchorage.
