WILDER APPOINTS 2 TO STATE POSITIONS

Gov. Douglas Wilder on Tuesday named former campaign aide Scott D. Bates as secretary of the commonwealth and Education Secretary James W. Dyke Jr. as chairman of the state Compensation Board.

Both positions became vacant with the departure of Pamela Womack, who resigned to head former Attorney General Mary Sue Terry's campaign for governor.

Bates was deputy campaign manager in Wilder's brief presidential bid last year.

Dyke will continue as head of the Education Department, a post he has held since Wilder took office in 1990.
