GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL STUDENTS WIN IN ENGINEERING TEST

Students from the Southwest Virginia Governor's School who competed in a national engineering test at Virginia Tech last month have been notified that they won two first-place awards.

The school's senior team took first place in the Junior Engineering and Technological Society competition, and its two junior teams took first and second places in their category.

Each team had eight members. About 600 students in teams from schools throughout Southwest Virginia took part in the Feb. 19 competition.

Bob Carlson, the school's assistant director and coach of its JETS teams, said the competition goes back about 11 years and its nature changes every year.

The eight team members got one answer sheet this year and had to agree among themselves on each multiple-choice answer. They were allowed to consult books in arriving at their answers. Each team could bring as many as 200 books.

"We probably came close," Carlson said. "This is kind of a slice of reality. It's how you'd deal with problems in the real world."

No team is expected to complete the test in the two-hour time limit, and scores generally range from the teens into the 40s. The Governor's School score was 46, a level reached by only one other Virginia school in the competition.

"These students are highly competitive," Margaret Duncan, the school's director, told its governing board Tuesday.
