FEMALE STUDENT SUES CITADEL ON ADMISSION
A high school student who was accepted, then rejected by The Citadel when school officials learned she was a woman, sued the military college Tuesday."This is a direct attack on the corps of cadets," said Suzanne Coe, the attorney for 18-year-old Shannon Faulkner.
The class-action lawsuit charges that the state-supported college's admissions policy violates Faulkner's equal-protection rights and asks that she be admitted to the all-male corps of cadets.
The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute are the only all-male, state-supported military schools in the nation.
The college's application does not ask a student's sex. Faulkner had asked that her transcripts delete any reference to her gender. The Citadel learned she was a woman when it contacted officials at her high school for more information.
