MARCOS ORDERED TO REPAY $1 MILLION LOAN

A judge Tuesday ordered Imelda Marcos to repay $1 million the former first lady of the Philippines had borrowed from a Virginia Beach woman.

U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumar entered the default judgment on behalf of Sandra Garcia after listening to testimony about the loan, several old masters paintings and three other pending lawsuits.

When Marcos visited southeastern Virginia in 1991 to take part in Filipino-American cultural activities, she stayed at the Virginia Beach condominium of Garcia and her husband, developer Edward Garcia.

Marcos said she wanted to move back to her native land, so Sandra Garcia decided to give her a loan. But nearly two years later, it has not been repaid.

"She's quite embarrassed," Garcia, owner of ESG Enterprises, testified Tuesday. "She continues to send flowers on holidays. . . . She's still warm and friendly but not able to pay the loan at this time."

An accountant for the Garcias testified that Sandra Garcia wrote more than $900,000 in checks for Marcos' moving expenses. - Associated Press
