OBIT HOBBIE, JASON DEXTER III
HOBBIE, Jason Dexter III, 78, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, March 2, 1993, at
his home. Mr. Hobbie was born June 16, 1914, in Roanoke, the son of the late
Jason Dexter Hobbie Jr. and Laura Beverly Rodes Hobbie. Mr. Hobbie attended
Augusta Military Academy and Washington and Lee University. He joined his
father at Hobbie Brothers in 1938, and succeeded him as president and
treasurer in 1965, he retired in 1984. During that time he served on the board
of directors of the National Association of Music Merchants for 1959-62 and
again for 1969-72. He was an arbitrator of the Roanoke Valley Better Business
Bureau, a director of the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce. He was also a
member of the Roanoke Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs. Mr. Hobbie was a former member
and elder at Salem Presbyterian Church and a member of Second Presbyterian
Church, Roanoke. He was a life long member of the Shenandoah Club, member and
past president of the Roanoke German Club. He gave 8 years of dedicated
service as a volunteer to the Roanoke Memorial Rehabilitation and Cancer
Center, where he was an original member of the Adult Volunteer Advisory
Council of Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his former
wife, Elizabeth Burnett Hobbie. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Harris
Connelly Hobbie, Roanoke; two daughters, Beverly Hobbie Lumsden, Roanoke,
Margaret Langhorne Hobbie, Roanoke; two sons, Jason Dexter Hobbie IV, Roanoke,
Edwin ("Bo") Burnett Hobbie, Harrisonburg; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth C.
Jimenez; five stepsons, David E. Connelly, Eugene H. Connelly, H. Branch
Connelly, Peter H. Connelly, Robert R. Connelly II; two grandchildren, ten
stepgrandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Burnett Woods Hatch; and a
very special friend, Donna Connelly. A private graveside service will be held
for the family. Memorial services will be conducted by Rev. William R. Klein
at Second Presbyterian Church on Friday at 11 a.m. The family will receive
friends at Oakey's South Chapel on Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of
flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Good Samaritan
Hospice Program, 4235 Colonial Ave., S.W. Roanoke, VA 24018 or the RMH
Rehabilitation Center Volunteer Fund in care of Roanoke Hospitals Foundation,
P.O. Box 12425, Roanoke, VA 24035.
