SANDLOT TEAMS WIN SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

The Inner City Falcons of the Little League and the North Salem Eagles of the PeeWee League have been received John A. Kelley Sportsmanship Awards for the 1992 Roanoke Valley Super Bowl.

The awards were presented during a recent meeting of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce's Public Recreation Committee, sponsors of the event.

The Falcons took Division I honors, and the Eagles took Division II honors. Game officials judged the teams on conduct, cheering sections and fans.

Charles Barlow, assisted by Joe Anderson, coached the Falcons, and Mary Ferrell was cheerleading adviser.

Bob Powell and Doug Baker coached the Eagles, and Wendy Poore was cheerleading coach.

The awards are in memory of the late John Kelley, who was chamber official and a long-time supporter of sandlot football and other youth sports.

The chamber also dispensed funds to the five municipalities that competed in the Super Bowl. The funds will be used for equipment and other needs. The funds were divided according to the number of teams each locality had playing ball.

Roanoke County had 20 teams and received $2,027; Roanoke had 19 teams and received $1,969; Salem had 12 teams and received $1,216; Botetourt County, three teams, $289; and Bedford, three teams, $287.

The games raised $9,024; the net profit was $5,791.

The event stimulated much area support and community spirit, said Jim Carroll, chairman of the sponsoring committee. "It just goes to show that when a worthy cause is presented our community, the parents and fans will rally together. We think the Super Bowl is a great regional event and hope it continues to grow."
