TECH NIPS ODU 13-12 IN OPENER

Virginia Tech held off two Old Dominion rallies to open its baseball season with a 13-12 victory in Norfolk on Wednesday.

Rob Gibson (1-0), a junior from Salem, pitched two innings of relief to earn the win.

The Hokies led 5-1 after four innings, but the Monarchs rallied to take a 7-5 lead going into the top of the ninth.

In the ninth, the first seven Tech batters reached base on walks, accounting for three runs and an 8-7 lead for the Hokies. Freshman David Fritt then hit a three-run triple and J.R. Hawkins added a two-run double to make it 13-7.

In the bottom of the ninth, ODU (6-1) rallied again, scoring five runs on two hits. With the winning run on second base and two outs, Tech pitcher Sean Hummel coaxed a grounder to first to earn a save.

Hawkins finished with three hits, all doubles, to tie a Tech game record. Brad Hatfield was 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Wayne Gomes (0-1) was the losing pitcher for ODU.

In other college news:

In Jacksonville, Fla., Chad Evans had two hits and two RBI as Lynchburg (1-4) beat Ferrum 3-1 in college baseball. Ferrum's Chad France added two hits and Andy Calahan scored the lone run. The Panthers are 2-2 and play Maryville in their home opener on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Washington and Lee men's and women's lacrosse teams opened their seasons with Old Dominion Athletic Conference victories.

In Greensboro, N.C., Nicole Ripken scored six goals and Lisa Dowling scored five goals as the women's team defeated Guilford 20-6.

The men's team knocked off Randolph-Macon 20-4 in Buena Vista. Wiemi Douoguih, Scott Mackley and David Lefkowitz each scored four goals for the Generals.
