UVA'S BURGE TOP PLAYER, RYAN TOP COACH IN ACC

Two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference player Heather Burge of Virginia, who averaged 18.7 points and 7.8 rebounds this season, was voted ACC women's basketball player of the year Wednesday.

Virginia's Debbie Ryan was selected the league's coach of the year after leading the Cavaliers to a 13-3 ACC mark and a 21-5 overall record.

Burge, a 6-foot-5 senior center, holds the Virginia record for field goals made in a career with 811 and for career blocked shots with 139. She was the first player in Cavalier history to have a combination of 1,500 points, 900 rebounds and 100 blocks.

The rest of the all-conference team: Tonya Sampson of North Carolina, Shandy Bryan of Clemson, Jessie Hicks of Maryland and Tia Paschal of Florida State.

On the second team are Virginia's Dena Evans, Georgia Tech's Joyce Pierce, Wake Forest's Tracy Connor and two players from North Carolina State - Tammy Gibson and Danyel Parker.

Connor was picked ACC rookie of the year after averaging 20.6 points and 11.1 rebounds. Also on the all-freshman team: Wendy Palmer and Jenny Boucek of Virginia, Jen Scanlon of Duke and Kathy Dortch of Georgia Tech. - Associated Press
