\ State to urge utility to buy from TAMCO
BRISTOL, Va. - The Virginia Department of Economic Development is joining the effort to persuade Virginia Power to buy electricity from an experimental coal-fired generating plant.
"What we are going to do is begin to meet with Virginia Power to try to work out a reasonable compromise," said April Young, director of the Department of Economic Development.
The facility could create as many as 1,000 jobs in Southwest Virginia and generate thousands of tax dollars.
The General Assembly refused to force Virginia Power's involvement, which would be needed for the TAMCO Power Partners project to qualify for a $90 million grant from the federal Department of Energy Clean Coal Technology.
Virginia Power battled the bill, saying it does not need the TAMCO electricity and it would be costly to consumers. - Associated Press
