LIGHT, FLOYD BUFFALO NORTHWOOD

Floyd County's Region C boys' basketball opener included a dazzling Light show.

Six-foot-5 Buffaloes center Jason Light made all 13 of his shots from the field Wednesday and scored 31 points as he steered Floyd to a 64-54 win over Northwood at Christiansburg High School.

For a 10-minute span in the second half, Light ruled the lane. In the last half of the third quarter and the first half of the fourth, he scored 23 of his team's 28 points, including the last 14 straight.

When he started his streak, Northwood led 33-27. When he was done - with 3:29 remaining - the dazed Panthers trailed 55-48.

"They played pretty good defense on me in the first half," said Light, who had eight points before halftime. "But I started ducking in more in the second half and the shots started falling.

"I wanted the ball, I got it and I hit the shots. I had the height advantage. I don't know if I was scaring them or what."

Northwood led 31-24 at the half and 33-27 early in the third period. Light then scored nine straight, Mike Hylton and Monty Moran hit jumpers and Light hit for six more as the Buffaloes closed the third quarter up 47-44.

Light then scored his team's first eight points of the fourth as Floyd (18-6) built a seven-point lead.

"The kids did a great job setting Jason up," said Floyd coach Alan Cantrell. "We ran a couple different offenses and the first option is always to look inside.

"I was hoping the inside game would be a factor. I had heard a couple of people say that there wasn't a dominating big man like Jason in Northwood's league. They did a good job keeping us out of the middle in the first half, but then we really powered it inside."

Jeremiah Slusher took over for Light in the final minutes. Slusher scored seven of Floyd's last nine points and finished with 12. Phillip Marshall added 11.

Johnny Cregger led Northwood (19-6) with 17 points and point guard Jon Griffin added 15.

The Buffaloes will play Pioneer District champion Glenvar on Friday night at Christiansburg in a region semifinal game.

In the other first-round game Wednesday, Covington eliminated Grayson County 64-50. \
