SCREENING FINDS LOTS OF HIGH CHOLESTEROL

The results of an areawide cardiac risk assessment screening show many residents of the New River Valley have high or near-high cholesterol levels.

Nearly three-quarters of the 97 participants in the project last fall had borderline or high levels of cholesterol and high levels of LDL ("bad") cholesterol.

The average cholesterol level among the participants was 219.

Seventeen percent of those screened had HDL ("good") cholesterol levels below what is considered desirable and 71 percent had a cholesterol ratio that was borderline or worse. Twelve percent had borderline or high triglyceride levels and 10 percent had borderline or high levels of blood sugar.

The average age of those screened was 54.

The screening was sponsored by HeartNet of Virginia and Radford Community Hospital.

A similar "Heart Profile" screening will be held March 27 at the hospital. The cost is $20. For more information, call The Heart Center at Radford Community Hospital at 731-2615 or (800) HEART RH.
