FUTURES TASK FORCE MEETS TONIGHT

The Futures Task Force report on transforming Pulaski County schools for the next century will be made at 7:30 tonight in the Pulaski County High's Little Theater. It was planned for last Thursday and postponed due to snow.

A goal of the task force is to provide a blueprint for ways the school system can take advantage of technology for education.

An introduction in booklet form to the full report, "Sculpting the Future: Transforming to Next Century Schools," will be given to all parents, educators and other interested people attending the meeting. A videotape will also be shown demonstrating how other school systems have approached the need for change.

The group was drawn from businesses, higher education, local government and the schools. It studied economic and demographic data relating to Pulaski County students in making its recommendations.

Task force members from business and industry are Daniel Grubb, Volvo-GM; Hiawatha Nicely, Magnox Inc.; Daniel Syvertsen, Warner-Lambert; and Paul Torgersen, Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center.

Higher education is represented by Peter Balsamo, Radford University; New River Community College President Edwin Barnes; and Wayne Worner, Virginia Tech. Also participating are Todd Strohmenger, Appalachia Educational Laboratory, and Judith Self, Virginia Department of Education.

Local government members are Bruce Fariss, Pulaski County Board of Supervisors, and Assistant County Administrator Peter Huber. Superintendent William Asbury and School Board member Nathan Tuck also are on the task force.

Others from the county school system are Principals Thomas DeBolt, Michael Amstein and Paul Phillips; staff members Isabel Berney, Joy Colbert and James Sandidge; and teachers Shelia Spangler, Elissa Steeves and Mary Todd. Yvonne Thayer served as consultant.
