LOAN DISPUTE PRECEDED KILLING
A dispute over a loan for a sports bet may have led to the killing of a Roanoke man Tuesday night.Joseph Turner Davis Jr., 47, of the 3700 block of Woodcrest Road died after being shot in the back, shoulder and left arm.
Police found Davis lying on the kitchen floor of his home shortly before 8. He was pronounced dead soon after his arrival at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Ricky Lynn O'Neil, 40, Davis' brother-in-law, faces charges of murder and use of a firearm.
A Roanoke Police Department news release said responding officers were met in the driveway by Davis' wife.
The woman told police that a man had shot her husband and was still in the house, armed with two guns.
Police said the front door to the house was locked but soon was opened by O'Neil, who had a semiautomatic pistol and a small revolver. He was taken into custody.
Police said the shooting occurred after O'Neil came to the house from a bar and was unable to borrow money to place a bet on a sports event.
