MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENT OPENS REGISTRATION

The inaugural K92/Mountain Dew Virginia State Championship Mountain Bike Series championship will combine points earned in three events.

Cash and prizes for individual races and the overall series will be well into the thousands of dollars, including framesets and other premium awards. State champions will be crowned in several categories, including: beginner, junior (under 17), women, sport (18-34), veteran and expert (35 up).

The three courses - in Blacksburg, Catawba and Bedford - represent a variety of designs to favor various riding strengths, such as technical single track, muddy forest road, big climbs in small gears and rolling fast woods.

The first race, the Sixth Annual Rowdy Dawg, will be March 21 in Blacksburg on an all-new track. For more information, call race director Scott Koehn at 953-2772.

The second race, The Dragon's Back, is April 4 in Catawba. This course is a technical single track deluxe with a climb and a narrow ledge-trail descent. For more information, call race directors John Corliss at 774-7933 and Kyle Inman at 981-1034.

The final race, Thunderr in Holy Land, will be on April 18 in Bedford. This is a fast course blended for aerobic benefit. For more information, call Jim Swasey at 586-6471.

Prerace registration for all three events is $39, payable by March 13.

For a single event, prerace registration is $15 and same-day registration is $20.

To preregister, mail checks payable to John Corliss and a signed form with name, address, city, state, zip code, phone number, sex, age and class you want to participate in to K92/Mountain Dew Virginia State Championship, c/o East Coasters Cycling & Fitness, 4341 Starkey Road, Roanoke 24014.
