JASON HOBBIE, HEAD OF MUSIC STORE, DIES

Jason Dexter Hobbie III, k president of the old Hobbie Brothers music store in downtown Roanoke for almost 20 years, died Tuesday at his home. He was 78.

Hobbie was the third-generation owner of the store founded by his grandfather in 1881. He joined the company, once one of the oldest retail stores in the Roanoke Valley, in 1938 and remained active until 1984 when the business was sold.

The company once shipped pianos and organs by wagon and train throughout Southwest Virginia. Branches were operated in Knoxville and Memphis, Tenn. Six Hobbies worked at the company through the years.

He had been a director of the National Association of Music Merchants and the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce, an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau of Western Virginia, an elder at Salem Presbyterian Church, president of Roanoke German Club and a member of the Adult Volunteer Advisory Council at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Harris Connelly Hobbie; daughters Beverly Lumsden and Margaret Hobbie, both of Roanoke; sons J. Dexter Hobbie IV of Roanoke and Edwin B. Hobbie of Harrisonburg; five stepsons; and a stepdaughter.

A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be private.
