REALTY BROKER `SONNY' PATRICK DIES AT 58
Roanoke real estate broker Cameron A. "Sonny" Patrick died Wednesday at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.Patrick, 58, was admitted to the hospital Dec. 1 for treatment of pneumonia. There were complications, and he had been in a coma for three weeks before he died.
Patrick blazed a new trail in the local real estate business by establishing Roanoke's first "buyer agency," Buyer Realty Services Inc. Although commonplace on the West Coast, the concept was new to the Roanoke Valley. Real estate agencies traditionally represent the seller.
"It's a shame he died before he could see other agencies doing what he started here," said broker Lee Mastin with Mastin, Kirkland, Bolling Inc.
Patrick worked briefly at Mastin, Kirkland, Bolling before starting his own agency.
Patrick's daughter, Dayna Patrick, said the six-agent Buyer Realty will continue, with Susie Craig as principal broker.
"Sonny" Patrick was in the real estate business 25 years. A native of Vinita, Okla., he moved his family - wife, Michelle "Micki"; sons Greg and Gary; and Dayna - to the Roanoke Valley in 1974.
He had been driving from Norfolk to his home in Las Vegas when he decided it was so beautiful in the Roanoke Valley that he wanted to live here, his daughter said.
Patrick requested that his family have a celebration of his life instead of a funeral.
"It was a part of his positive attitude toward life," his daughter said.
