VMI'S PRESTON IS SELECTED ALL-CONFERENCE

Senior center Lewis Preston of VMI was selected to the 10-man Southern Conference first team by the coaches at an honors luncheon Thursday in Asheville, N.C.

Tennessee-Chattanooga's Tim Brooks was voted player of the year and his coach, Mack McCarthy, was chosen coach of the year. Bill Harder of Furman was selected freshman of the year and was joined by Lawrence Gullette of VMI on the all-freshman team.

In other basketball news:

Coastal Carolina's Tony Dunkin was chosen the Big South Conference's player of the year for the fourth straight time and Terry Truax of first-year member Towson State was tapped as the coach of the year in voting by the coaches.

Dunkin, a 6-foot-7 forward, led the conference with 24 points per game and a 51.4 percent accuracy rate from 3-point range. Truax, in his 10th years as coach of the Tigers, directed his team to a 14-2 record in the league and 18-8 overall. Towson State was the regular-season champion.

The rest of the all-conference team: Liberty center Julius Nwosu, Campbell forward Joe Spinks and Towson State guards Terrance Alexander and Devin Boyd.

Radford's Doug Day made the second team.
