WINTER SPORTS FESTIVAL CANCELED

Virginia Amateur Sports' winter athletic event has been canceled, a victim of weather and low turnout.

The Mid-Atlantic Sports Festival at Wintergreen Resort was to hold competition this weekend in five events - golf, slalom and freestyle snowboarding, and slalom and giant slalom alpine skiing. Bad weather forced scratching of the golf tournament, and lack of registrants for the other events "didn't make it worth the time, effort and money," VAS executive director Pete Lampman said Thursday.

"We put the hook in the water and didn't catch it," Lampman said, adding that a winter event next year is possible.

Roanoke-based VAS still plans the fourth edition of the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, to be held mostly in the Roanoke Valley this summer. The Games' main weekend is scheduled for July 16-18 with some events the week before and after. Lampman said competition is planned in about 35 sports, and at least three - roller skating, senior golf and girls' volleyball - will be held in Lynchburg.

\ Senior Claire Dudley and freshman Rebekah Prince will represent Washington and Lee at the Division III women's swimming championships March 11-13 at Emory University in Atlanta. Prince, the Atlantic States swimmer of the year, will compete in the 200-yard backstroke, 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley. Dudley, making her fourth trip to the championships, will swim in the 200 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.
