CONGRESSIONAL RACES GOT COSTLIER IN '92

Congressional candidates spent more than ever seeking office in 1992 - $678 million - as incumbents dug deeper into their war chests to fend off stubborn challenges, the government reported Thursday.

Spending by House and Senate candidates jumped 52 percent over 1990 levels and shattered the previous spending record of $459 million set in 1988, the Federal Election Commission said.

All told, $6.49 was spent for each vote cast on Election Day. - Associated Press
