WORD WANTS OUT OF KANSAS CITY UNIFORM

Barry Word, the leading rusher for the Kansas City Chiefs over the past three seasons, says he is not appreciated and no longer wants to play for the NFL team.

The former Virginia standout said he would not attend any of the Chiefs' off-season conditioning workouts and will skip the team's minicamp in May, The Kansas City Star reported Thursday.

"I want to be a feature back in the offense," said Word, 28. "I don't really feel appreciated here, and we still have all these running backs. History has proven that there are not a lot of happy guys back there. Unfortunately, I am the only one who will say it."

Word ran for 2,305 yards in the past three seasons. Last season, coach Marty Schottenheimer experimented with several running backs, substantially reducing Word's carries.

\ The NFL set a record with its total paid attendance for the fourth straight season, drawing 17,784,354 to break the 1991 record by 32,215. The Buffalo Bills led the league in home paid attendance for the fifth straight year with 630,978 for eight games. The league said 14 other teams topped the half-million mark: Kansas City, New York Giants, New York Jets, Denver, Cleveland, Atlanta, Detroit, New Orleans, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Dallas.
