JORDAN, LAETTNER, COWBOYS DOMINATE WITH 3 ESPYS EACH
Michael Jordan and Christian Laettner won three individual ESPY awards each, and the Dallas Cowboys won three as a team Thursday night at ESPN's first American Sports Awards show.The ESPYs rewarded the famous as well as the not-so-famous as Atlanta Braves player Francisco Cabrera won two awards, both in the video category for his game-winning hit against Pittsburgh in the National League playoffs.
Jordan won ESPYs highest individual award as outstanding male Athlete of the year. He also was voted pro basketball performer of the year and won a video award for the pro basketball play of the year.
Laettner, honored for his play during his senior year at Duke, was honored as college basketball player of the year, outstanding performance under pressure and college basketball play of the year in the video category.
The Cowboys were named team of the year in all sports, coach Jimmy Johnson was voted coach-manager of the year in all sports, and running back Emmitt Smith won the ESPY as the pro football player of the year.
ESPYs are awarded in three categories: "cross-cutter" awards judging athletes of all sports together, video awards and performers of the year from individual sports. The cross-cutter awards were voted on by a select committee, the video winners were chosen by ESPN viewers, and the individual sport awards were judged by peers.
Another multiple winner was tennis player Monica Seles, named outstanding female athlete of the year and women's tennis performer of the year.
A special award, the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, was given to Jim Valvano, who is battling cancer.
A total of 34 awards were handed out during ceremonies hosted by comedian Dennis Miller.
