TREASURY SECRETARY'S SON PROBED OVER RTC DEALINGS

A son of Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen is being investigated by the Resolution Trust Corp. for possible violation of rules governing management of the federal agency's properties, the son's attorneys said Friday.

The investigation centers on whether Houston investor Lan Bentsen disclosed to the RTC that a company in which he was a principal defaulted on $54 million in loans inherited by the RTC.

The agency, which is responsible for disposing of assets from the nation's failed savings and loans, is barred from doing business with individuals or companies that have defaulted on loans or caused a loss of more than $50,000 to a failed thrift.

Violation of the rules would result in Lan Bentsen being barred from doing any future business with the RTC.

RTC officials refused to discuss the investigation while it's in progress.

Lan Bentsen referred calls to two Texas attorneys who represent a property management company, Sovereign National Management Corp., in which he owns a 35 percent stake. - Associated Press
