WELSH ANNOUNCES NEW UVA COACH

Former Kentucky defensive coordinator Larry New will join Virginia's football staff as the defensive tackles coach, UVa coach George Welsh said Friday.

New, 48, replaces linebackers coach Mike Archer, who replaced New at Kentucky.

Bob Petchel, who last year coached Virginia's defensive line, will coach only the ends. Defensive coordinator Rick Lantz is expected to add the linebackers to his duties.

New left Kentucky after three seasons as the Wildcats' top defensive coach. He has also coached at Alabama, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Arkansas and Missouri.

"He's been around a long time and he has a lot of experience in college football, both coaching and recruiting. He can especially help us recruit in the South," said Welsh, noting that New has recruited Georgia, South Carolina and parts of Florida. "We're going to try to do a little more [there], especially in Florida."
