NAMES & CHANGES

Kroger names vice president for regional merchandising

LEONARD A. TERRANOVA has been appointed vice president of merchandising for the Mid-Atlantic marketing area of Kroger Food Stores. He succeeds JAMES R. THORNE, who has been promoted to president of the Kroger Mid-Atlantic Marketing Area.

The Mid-Atlantic Marketing Area operates 113 Kroger Food Stores in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and the eastern edge of Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.

A native of Michigan and a graduate of Ferris University, he joined Kroger in 1976. He has held positions with Kroger in Michigan, Texas and Missouri, and immediately prior to his recent move to Roanoke, was director of produce and floral merchandising at Kroger's corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio.

CINDY ARTHUR has been named traffic manager for The Maddox Agency in Roanoke. A liberal arts and science graduate of Virginia Tech, she holds a certificate from the National Center of Paralegal Training in Atlanta. She has 12 years' experience in sales, the legal field and data management.

AGRICULTURE

Progressive Farmer magazine has named ARTHUR ELLER of Blacksburg 1993 Man of the Year in Service to Virginia Agriculture. For 38 years, Eller has worked with the Virginia Tech extension program. Until his recent retirement, he was extension project leader in the university's department of animal science. His accomplishments include organizing the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association and the Nation Beef Improvement Federation and developing Integrated Resource Management, a beef cattle education program. In the 1960s, he was chairman of the Southeastern committee on standardization of beef cattle performance-testing programs. He has also supervised the three Virginia bull test stations that annually test more than 600 bulls, 400 or more which are sold to Virginia farmers.

The Valley Council of Professional Arborists has announced that seven people in the Roanoke and New River valleys have passed the International Society of Arboriculture examination to become IBA certified arborists. They are: JAMES ASBERRY, Stacey Tree Service, Roanoke; DENNIS DUFF, Custom Cut Tree Service, Roanoke; PETER PERET, Virginia Tech Department of Forestry, Blacksburg; ROBERT HORNE JR., Custom Cut Tree Service; MICHAEL STEVENS, Bartlett Tree Expert Co.; DEBBIE SINEX, horticulturist for the City of Salem; and ROBERT TRICKEL, Virginia Department of Forestry, Salem.

BANKING

LACY A. SMITH of Buchanan has been elected to the board of directors of Farm Credit Bank of Baltimore. A dairy and livestock farmer, he was elected to a three-year term by the boards of directors of the Bank's Agricultural Credit Associations.

\ SALLY R. BAILEY has joined Virginia First Savings Bank as manager of the Vinton branch. She previously worked for Signet Bank in Richmond.

Dominion Bankshares Corp. has announced the promotion of CECILIA L. DOYLE to assistant vice president and the election of SANDRA C. BROWN to audit officer and MARY M. SNYDER to corporate support analyst.

Doyle is responsible for analyzing and evaluating existing and potential commercial borrowers for risk and credit worthiness.

Brown oversees audit programming and audit support activities.

Snyder serves as financial information coordinator for corporate banking and assists with the annual profit planning process.

COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

ALLETHIA J. INGRAM, assistant to the president of Lynchburg College and director of the college's office of institutional change, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust. The trust is a fund that provides for the administration and investment of gifts and bequests to benefit the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford and counties of Amherst, Bedford and Campbell.

ENGINEERING

JOHN M. MANN has joined Sowers & Associates, P.C., Consulting Engineers as a principal. He is an engineering graduate of Virginia Tech and is licensed as a professional engineer in Virginia and California.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

F. FULTON GALER, C.P.A. has joined McLeod & Co., a Roanoke firm of certified public accountants. He previously worked as a tax partner providing specialized tax planning services with KPMG Peat Marwick in Roanoke. He received his master's degree in taxation from Virginia Tech.

\ CONNIE CROSS GUELICH of The New England, an insurance firm in Roanoke has earned the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designation from The American College in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

GOVERNMENT

HAROLD MINNIX and IRA LONG have completed the second annual Virginia County Board Chairman's Institute. The program was developed to provide county board chairmen with a comprehensive overview of county government and chairman duties, powers and responsibilities. Minnix is chairman of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors and Long is chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.

INSURANCE

JOHN H. PARROTT JR. has been named vice president at Thomas Rutherfoord Inc. in Roanoke. A graduate of the University of Virginia, he has been with the firm for five years.

\ ROBERT H. SPILMAN has been elected chairman of the board of directors of Jefferson-Pilot. He is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Bassett Furniture Industries and has been a director of Jefferson-Pilot for eight years.

\ ANDREW W. KING has been promoted to senior vice president at Liberty National Life Insurance Co. A native of Roanoke, he joined Globe Life and Accident Insurance Co. in Roanoke as a sales agent in 1980. He became unit manager of the office in 1982 and regional trainer-southern region and branch manager in Globe's Charleston, S.C., office in 1985. He moved to Globe's home office in Oklahoma City, Okla., in 1987 and was named regional vice president for Liberty National Life in Birmingham, Ala., in 1990.

MEDICINE

JAMES G. NUCKOLLS, M.D., a medical staff member at Twin County Community Hospital in Galax, has been elected to the executive committee of the board of directors of the SunHealth Alliance. The alliance is made up of approximately 150 not-for-profit hospital partners operating or affiliated with some 250 hospital facilities.

ORGANIZATION

STEVE RAML, news director for Harrisonburg television station WHSV, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters. He will serve as the board's Shenandoah Valley representative. The region includes Augusta, Clarke, Frederick, Page, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Warren counties and the cities of Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton, Waynesboro and Winchester.

REAL ESTATE

VALERIE EAGLE and JEFF MARONIC have joined HCMF Real Estate & Housing Management Corp. Eagle will be the residential sales manager. Maronic was formerly an agent with Cumins & Co.

RETAIL

BETTY SARGENT has been appointed manager of Love Baskets LTD at Towers Mall. She will be in charge of all floral designs and will work with customers in decorating homes and offices. She formerly worked with Countryside Gifts and Greenway Court.

\ DON FANT has joined Magic City Ford's sales team. He has several years' automobile sales experience.

TRANSPORTATION

PAUL N. AUSTIN has been appointed assistant vice president of personnel at Norfolk Southern Corp. He joined Norfolk and Western Railway in 1968 as an analyst in the personnel department and worked in various positions before becoming director of compensation for Norfolk Southern in 1987.

UTILITIES

JOHN WILLIAMSON has been named vice president of rates and finance for Roanoke Gas Co. He joined the company in May 1992 after working as administrator of Botetourt County for six years. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, he earned a master's of business administration with a concentration in finance at the College of William and Mary.
