TOURNEY TO AID RESPITE-CARE PROGRAM
Entries still are being taken for the Captain's Choice Golf Tournament to raise money for a Wytheville-based respite care program in Southwest Virginia. The tournament will start Saturday at 9 a.m. at Crestview Golf Course in Ennis, N.C., just across the state line from Galax.
The $20 registration covers the green and cart fees; the golf course will return $12 per entry to the Mount Rogers Community Services Board Respite Care Program.
The program started last year with a $20,000 seed grant that expired Sept. 28. "Since then we have only been locally funded," said respite care coordinator Terri Fitzwater of Dublin.
Respite care helps families with developmentally disabled or chronically ill children by helping them find care providers to give them a break from the constant care required and to give the children a chance to interact with another adult.
The provider stays with the child "so that Mom and Dad can go to the grocery store, or run their errands, or just go to dinner with each other," Fitzwater said. "Things that we take for granted, these people have not been able to experience because of the demands that having a developmentally disabled child brings."
Wal-Mart has donated a set of golf clubs to be raffled off during the tournament, with $1 tickets available to participants. Other prizes have been donated by CMT Sporting Goods in Blacksburg, Radio Shack in Galax and Lee Ralphs Sporting Goods in Galax and Wytheville.
