HOKIES FACE TULANE IN METRO

Virginia Tech's loss Saturday means it will face second-seeded Tulane at noon Friday in the first round of the Metro Conference basketball tournament at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky.

The seventh-seeded Hokies (9-17 overall, 1-11 Metro) finished last in the conference for the second straight year.

Tech was swept by Tulane this season, losing 84-72 in New Orleans Jan. 9 and 72-59 in Blacksburg Feb. 4. The Hokies have lost in the first round of the tournament in six of the past seven seasons.

The other first-round games Friday: top-seeded Louisville (11-1 Metro) has a bye; third-seeded Virginia Commonwealth (7-5) faces sixth-seeded South Florida (2-10) at 2:30 p.m., and fourth-seeded UNC Charlotte (6-6) plays fifth-seeded Southern Mississippi (6-6) at 7 p.m. UNCC won a tie-breaker with Southern Miss for the fourth seed.

In next Saturday's second round, the Tulane-Tech winner plays the VCU-South Florida winner at 7 p.m., and Louisville plays the UNCC-Southern Miss winner at 9:30.

Next Sunday's championship game, which carries an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the winner, is at 1 p.m.
