CAVALIERS ROAR PAST WAKE 74-46
Heather Burge had 18 points as 10th-ranked Virginia beat Wake Forest 74-46 Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball tournament.The top-seeded Cavaliers (22-5) advanced to the semifinals today at 6 p.m. against Clemson.
Virginia started the second half with a 16-4 run and grabbed a 47-28 lead with 14:14 remaining.
The Demon Deacons (14-14), who made 15 of 50 shots overall, never threatened again. Freshman Tracy Connor led Wake Forest with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Virginia used a 15-6 first-half run to lead 28-16 on Kristen Somogyi's steal and layup with 4:05 left. Wake Forest outscored the Cavaliers 8-3 the rest of the half to trail by seven at intermission. \
Metro Conference pairings
Second-seeded Virginia Tech plays South Florida and third-seeded Louisville meets Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the tournament, which begins Wednesday. The winners will meet in one semifinal Thursday. Fourth-seeded Tulane faces UNC Charlotte in the other first-round game Wednesday, with the winner playing conference champion Southern Mississippi in the other semifinal Thursday. The title game is at 9:30 p.m. Friday.
