GREENSBORO STOMPS RAMPAGE 9-2

The Greensboro Monarchs entered a two-game set with the Roanoke Valley Rampage on Saturday night looking to make some real progress in their fight for an ECHL playoff spot.

They did just that, rampaging over last-place Roanoke Valley 9-2 for Greensboro's seventh win in the teams' eight meetings this season.

"If we win [tonight] - which we should - then we're gonna be very close to a playoff spot," Monarchs coach Jeff Brubaker said. "I think what's gonna happen is it's gonna come down to the last game of the season. Next Saturday, we'll play Louisville [in Greensboro] and the winner of that game will probably be in the playoffs."

The Monarchs can only hope they'll have as easy a time with Louisville as they did with the Rampage.

Just 2:19 into the game, Greensboro's Phil Berger took a pass from Davis Payne and trickled in a power-play goal from just inside the blue line for a 1-0 lead.

Only 27 seconds later, Todd Gordon slapped a Chris Wolanin deflection past Rampage goalie Todd Chin to make it 2-0.

Roanoke Valley's Ken Blum scored at 9:48 of the first period on a pass from Cam Colborne, but at 16:24 of the period, Greensboro's Berger again trickled a goal past Chin, and the Monarchs headed to the second period leading 3-1.

Chin, who would have been charged with four errors on the night if this were baseball, let two more easy shots get through at the start of the second period before being pulled.

His defense did him no favors, as Roanoke Valley was outshot 31-14 in the first two periods.

Wolanin scored with 7:16 left in the second period, when his softly lofted shot deflected off Chin's glove and into the net for a 4-1 Monarchs lead.

At 9:39 of the period, Craig Herr trickled one last goal past Chin and Greensboro led 5-1.

Amazingly - or not so amazingly, considering the Rampage's record - Chin's replacement, Chris Puscian, gave up another goal just 12 seconds later, as Herr scored his second of the period.

Roanoke Valley's Chris Smith added a power-play goal at 12:43 to cut Greensboro's lead to 6-2 before the period ended.

At 4:12 of the third, Berger picked up a hat trick by knocking in an airborne puck.

Wolanin scored his second goal of the game 21 seconds later, to make it 8-2, and Jason Prosofsky scored the night's final goal. \
