WOMAN GENERAL TO SPEAK AT FERRUM
When Brigadier Gen. Patricia Hinneburg entered the U.S. Air Force in 1964, there were only 600 women in a force of approximately 8,000. Today women are 10 percent to 12 percent of a force of about 400,000.Then, women mainly filled clerical posts in personnel or supplies. But Hinneburg managed to land a choice spot in aircraft maintenance - the next best thing to being a pilot, which women, at that time, couldn't be.
During a nearly 30-year career, she traveled the world and advanced up the military ladder to positions seldom occupied by women. Since retiring in '92, she's applied her management expertise to the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce's Total Quality Management program to entice new industry to the valley.
At 7:30 tonight at Ferrum College Garber Hall, room 106, Hinneburg will talk about her military experiences and why the sky just may be the limit for women in the Air Force today.
