TECH RALLIES IN NINTH TO NIP E. CAROLINA

At Blacksburg, Virginia Tech rallied for three runs to tie the score in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday and went on to defeat East Carolina 6-5 in 10 innings.

Down 5-2 in the ninth, Tech's Popeye Smith singled and stole second base. Mike Reedy walked and Ken Nonamaker doubled to left center to score Smith and advance Reedy to third. After J.R. Hawkins was walked intentionally Dee Dalton singled to left, scoring Reedy and Nonamaker to tie the score.

In the 10th, David Fitt's sacrifice fly scored Sal Colangelo to win it for the Hokies (4-0).

For East Carolina (9-5), first baseman Lee Kushner hit a two-run home run in the sixth and a solo homer in the eighth.

Duane Filchner drove in seven runs as Radford defeated Bucknell 20-2, completing a three-game home sweep of the Bison (0-5).

Filchner, a sophomore leftfielder, had three-run doubles in the sixth and seventh innings as the Highlanders improved to 3-0.

At Ferrum, Billy Wagner struck out 10 and allowed one hit as Ferrum beat Maryville 9-0 in the first game before rolling 13-0 in five innings to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Chad France and Jeremy Hill each had three RBI in the first game for Ferrum (4-2). Jason Wilson had three hits and two RBI, and Jerold Smith homered and had three RBI in the second game.

VMI held off a ninth inning rally to defeat East Tennessee State 6-4 in Lexington and improve its record to 6-5.

Down four runs entering the ninth inning, ETSU's Rod Walker hit a two-run home run to cut the Buccaneers' deficit to two. VMI's Chris Tujo came in to get the last two outs and earn a save.

ETSU won a doubleheader against the Keydets on Saturday, 6-5 in the first game and 6-2 in the second.
